2. OBJECTIVES & OUTLINE:

(4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, 5 October 2011) Analysis of Energy and Natural Resources Demand

First, this seminar will explore some recent research topics in natural resources economics, and take the student beyond the geometry of the typical natural resources economics course. Main focus is on analysis of energy and natural resources demand function.

n Unit root, cointegration, and error correction model

n Shot-run and long-run elasticities

(4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, 12 October 2011) Causality Analysis of Energy Consumption and Economic Growth

Second, this seminar will cover causality analysis of energy consumption and economic growth. Theoretical background and applications of the analyses will be explained. The specific topics covered in the seminar are:

n Granger-causality

n Hsiao’s approach

(4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, 19 October 2011) Pricing and Structure in Energy Industry

Last but not least, this seminar will deal with pricing and structure in natural resource industry. Theories and methods for analyzing the issues will be explored. Real world applications will be also supplied. A strong understanding of the basic theory of the issues is the main focus of the seminar. The specific topics are for each student to be expected to understand:

n First-best Pricing, Second-best pricing, and Ramsey Pricing

n Natural Monopoly, Economies of Scale, and Economies of Scope
